Aimed at developing and positioning the programme as a premier point of reference in the region on issues relating to the provision of improved water supply with greater emphasis on sanitation for the poor and has been built upon:
Pro-Poor Water and Sanitation Governance,
Water Conservation and Demand Management,
Integrated Urban Sanitation,
Human Values-based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education, and
Income Generation for the Urban Poor through Community-based water and sanitation (WATSAN) services.
Country Support Strategies
Aimed at providing an integrated framework that will strengthen the coordination of the activities and ensure carrying out in a coherent manner to achieve the impact on the water and sanitation sector in the region, with special thrust on sanitation.
Recognizes the need for additional resource mobilization, consolidation and expansion of donor base, establishing innovative financing mechanisms that allows greater leveraging of resources and develop partnerships with the private sector.
Specific Objectives
Promote pro-poor urban governance to ensure the involvement of local authorities, communities, vulnerable groups, and integration of social inclusion and gender equity in water and sanitation service delivery.
Increased access to safe water supply services with special focus on urban poor.
Support to improve and increase sanitation coverage and hygiene promotion focusing on poor and the excluded communities and promotion of sustainable sanitation practices.
Support to adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly solid waste management systems.
Mainstreaming of gender, socially excluded, underprivileged communities and ethnic minorities.
Addressing Climate Change through capacity building and demonstration projects.
Enhance capacity for sustainable water and sanitation service delivery.
Assist in monitoring and localizing MDGs related to Water and Sanitation.
