Country Interventions - India
  • The project is being implemented in the cities of Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur in the State of Madhya Pradesh for the benefit of the poor and vulnerable, with a goal to pursue the accomplishment of the MDGs on water and sanitation by promoting:

    • Pro-poor approach to water and sanitation governance;
    • Urban Water Demand Management as a local action;
    • Gender Mainstreaming to benefit the entire community;
    • Training and capacity building for empowerment;
    • Environmental Sanitation Initiative;
    • Value-based education in water, sanitation and hygiene;
    • Community-managed pro-poor water and sanitation programmes;
    • Other initiatives include promotion of Rooftop Rain Water Harvesting, developing Urban Local Catchments Management Strategy and Action Plan, and City-wide Citizen Report Cards.
  • Policy directives by the Government of Madhya Pradesh on establishing community-based funding mechanisms and mainstreaming gender strategies, etc demonstrates spotlight on reforms in the water and sanitation sector.


 
  • Involvement of the communities, women self-help groups, NGOs, local governments and other urban local bodies ensure active participation of stakeholders.
  • UN-HABITAT contribution helped in leveraging equal amount funds from the State.

Planned Activities
 
  • Partnership with Arghyam Foundation, NGO, for integrated urban water resources management in Karnataka.
  • Micro-financing water and sanitation projects in partnership with National Housing Bank;
  • Community mobilization, awareness generation and capacity building for extension of Slum Environmental Sanitation Initiative and Community-managed Water Supply Scheme in the four project cities;
  • Citywide awareness generation and capacity building for collection and disposal of Solid Waste in an environmentally sustainable manner;
  • Institutionalization of Human Values-based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education through curriculum development and capacity building of teachers;
  • Pilot demonstration projects on safe handling and disposal of Bio-medical/Hospital waste;
  • State level Seminars on Sanitation for All.
