The project is being implemented in the cities of Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur in the State of Madhya Pradesh for the benefit of the poor and vulnerable, with a goal to pursue the accomplishment of the MDGs on water and sanitation by promoting:
Pro-poor approach to water and sanitation governance;
Urban Water Demand Management as a local action;
Gender Mainstreaming to benefit the entire community;
Training and capacity building for empowerment;
Environmental Sanitation Initiative;
Value-based education in water, sanitation and hygiene;
Community-managed pro-poor water and sanitation programmes;
Other initiatives include promotion of Rooftop Rain Water Harvesting, developing Urban Local Catchments Management Strategy and Action Plan, and City-wide Citizen Report Cards.
Policy directives by the Government of Madhya Pradesh on establishing community-based funding mechanisms and mainstreaming gender strategies, etc demonstrates spotlight on reforms in the water and sanitation sector.
Involvement of the communities, women self-help groups, NGOs, local governments and other urban local bodies ensure active participation of stakeholders.
UN-HABITAT contribution helped in leveraging equal amount funds from the State.
Planned Activities
Partnership with Arghyam Foundation, NGO, for integrated urban water resources management in Karnataka.
Micro-financing water and sanitation projects in partnership with National Housing Bank;
Community mobilization, awareness generation and capacity building for extension of Slum Environmental Sanitation Initiative and Community-managed Water Supply Scheme in the four project cities;
Citywide awareness generation and capacity building for collection and disposal of Solid Waste in an environmentally sustainable manner;
Institutionalization of Human Values-based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education through curriculum development and capacity building of teachers;
Pilot demonstration projects on safe handling and disposal of Bio-medical/Hospital waste;
